The Revellers

There is much reason for Ithacans to celebrate today. Annunciation Day and Independence from the Turks.  The Independence Parade is a serious affair on Ithaki.  The flags symbolize the unity of Greece and are given ardent respect by the entire community.  Just in case anyone forgot their importance however, one of the days' speakers was quick to remind the community

School children from all classes took part in the parade

After the war of independence the tunic represented the extent of the battle.  The dirtier the tunic, the harder the battle, the bigger the hero. The ones worn today by the boys of the island are from middle Greece and the Peloponnese.  Northern tunics are longer in the skirt

Ithakis leaders and heads of the Armed Forces gathered on the podium ready for the speeches

Sections among Greeks now believe that this ceremony is outdated due to the involvement of the Armed Forces, but with political passions running so deep in the hearts of Greeks, it's hard to believe the Independence Day Celebrations will ever become a thing of the past.

Regardless of anyones' beliefs, the Parade and ceremony make for a colourful day on which the children of Ithaki get to shine and show their pride for their country.

A warm sunny day

It's not difficult to understand the passion Greeks hold for politics and tradition when they are involved in both from an early age.  They nurture a respect for their politics and history, rarely seen in western communities, a respect they pass on from generation to generation and hold dear.  When a Greek raises his voice, it's rarely in anger, but with passion for his belief.
