  Winter on Ithaca 2006 - 2007

Tue 16 Jan - Above - Sundays strange light on the horizon. Monday, the Cat spaying program began on the island. Today, the venue has changed due to some hitches and mix ups yesterday. For Lack of venue, Dimitris Danis has offered his premises just outside Vathy, for the snipping.
Right - The great weather has fisherman and fishing birds out in the bays, reeling them in.

Wed 17 Jan - Above L - R - Ester, Judi, Mark and Lilia from the Ithaki Cats Foundation, give a helping hand to Yvette the Vet during a 3 day marathon of neutering.

Ithaki Cats Foundation have been busy neutering cats over the past few days, first in Vathy where they sterilized around 20 felines, and today in Stavros, where they have doubled the amount of cats getting neutered. The aim of Ithaki Cats over the past few days has been to make some money to buy the cages to collect the many stray cats around Ithaki, who are left to starve or to be vulnerable to poisoning after the Summer Season is over. A time when cats go from feast to famine. Ithaki Cats Foundation endeavors to keep the cat population down to decrease the impact starving cats have, not only on the island, but all over Greece. To read some facts on neutering, please click here. If you live in the EU and would like to become a member, please email Ester Van Zuylen by clicking here
Above - Blue Stars' Eptanisa Ferry takes on the Cephalonia route while the Kefalonia ferry gets its annual service leave.

It's a pleasant wait for the ferry at Piso Aetos in the midst of a Summer in Winter on Ithaca. The Eptanisa takes a little longer to travel Patras to Ithaki than the Kefalonia, but who cares, at least Ithaca has service.

Sat 20 Jan - We've been warned. Bad weather due next week. Hopefully we won't get the 12 force winds from Germany here. Right - View over cypress trees towards Platrithias.
Left - So which island has one of the most picturesque ports in the Ionian? Ithaca, no one here needs to be told that, right?
Below - Seagulls flock over Aetos beach.
Above - Looked like rain yesterday, dark skies, blacked out horizon...but no such luck. The temp was mild and by the afternoon, the dark clouds had cleared.
Sun 21 Jan - Below- "Rugs and chairs... thousands of chairs for sale" traveling through Stavros

More sunshine and warmth today with the top of 18C. Enough is enough. Everyone here wants winter, but instead Almond trees are blossoming, flowers are springing up in the fields, there are bumble bees and birds chirping. All the signs of Spring.
Indian Summer
Mon 22 Jan - Below - Platrithia towards Afales. It's back to the beach with the great weather we've had on the island. On the weekend, it's the Vathy cinema and during the week it's the Cafenion as usual, but sitting outside in the sunshine and not inside infront of the fireplace.

Tue 23 Jan - Above - Last week Yvette the vet came to town, as seen above left, with her dedicated helpers, Lilia and Ester. If you're thinking "Wow! pretty swishy vet-quarters, you'd be right. On the second day in Vathy, due to a venue mix up, Dimitri Danis offered the use of his new home for neutering. We hear he disappeared pretty quickly once the snipping started, but what a kind offer to Ithaki Cats.

Above Right - L - R - Dimitris Danis, Judi, Katherine, and Helen, Vathys' talented hair sculptor (or dresser as they are more commonly known). Chore time on Monday means a long cuppa and chat at the Cafenion afterwards. It's the best thing about Monday morning.

Right - Christina Kostiris' clothing shop is already featuring Carnival clothes in her shopfront window. Guess the 18 Feb, Carnival day, is not too far away now. A Sunday to look forward to. Christina Kostiri, one of Ithakis' new Council members, has had some association with the Vathy Carnival over the past few years.

It's definite folks! Chez Manu is no more. Nektarios Grivas, another new member of the Ithaki Council, will be running the side street/sidebar eatery from now on. The new name is Piccolo, the food will be mostly Greek kitchen, except for a few asian meals kept on by his right hand, Dimitris Danis, who was also the right hand at Chez Manu and once upon a time, the right hand at Spavento Bar in Kioni. Dimitri seems to be everyones' right hand. No wonder the left hand doesn't know what the right hands' doing.

Getting ready for Carnival time - Sun 18 Feb, but before Carnival, there's the big party on the 8th Feb. Jot it down. You won't want to miss either.

Usually Council members are locked away behind the Town Hall walls, never to be seen by tourists or the occasional visitor to the island. The new Council however, puts an end to that with some well known faces that even the visitors will recognize. As already mentioned, Christina Kostiri from the clothes shop, Nektarios Grivas from Piccolo, Avra from the shoe store and Omiros Kostopoulos, member for Tourism and Public Relations, from Polyctor Tours Travel Agency, just to name a few. Chances are they will be as passionate about their positions as they are about their businesses.
Rementzo Restaurant in Frikes has now closed its' doors until just before Easter. Poppy and Nek are busy lighting fire crackers under the workcrew responsible for finishing the home they would like to move into before the Summer season starts.
It's been a while since Spavento Bar has had a face lift, so it's no wonder that in February, Jenny and Yiorgo, owners of the Bar, will set about making Spavento all shiny and new again with new fittings and a new colour scheme.
Wed 24 Jan - Above - Stavros with Polis below, just before sunset.
