Sun 6 Jan - Left - Vathy Square is the vision of a shimmering wonderland. The bayside is looking very pretty through this festive season. Below Left - Drosia Restaurant in the hills toward Filiatro beach overlooking Vathy. Having dinner there is one of the best things you can do for yourself especially in winter. Yianni and Indira, although they don't put any Venezuelan dishes on the menu during this time of year, did make up a special sauce with the flavours of Indiras country to spice up the grill. Worth dragging yourself out into the cold for. Drosia is in the south of Ithaki, but last night all its patrons made their way from the north of the island to enjoy dinner out.

Above - Mylos, The Creperie, was buzzing too last night with members of the Ithaki Theatre Group, southerners and northerners soaking up the great atmosphere and very cool music. Below Left - Niko Karantzis, Mr. Chapprie, Oh My Garden and owner of Mylos, taking on the crepe duties during the winter. A great Saturday night out in Vathy.

A couple of days ago it snowed in Lefki again. Nothing like the episode a couple of years ago, but still, seeing any snow in Lefki is quite unusual. By the time I got out of bed it had melted again unfortunately.

Today the ritual cross throwing into the bay for Epiphany, where boys and men dive for the cross thrown by the Priest. Right - Thalia from Kioni is ithacagreece.com champion this year for being the only person in Kioni to dive into the very chilly waters and then heading on to Frikes to do the same. Tue 8 Jan - What a great day yesterday and from the skies this morning, another great day coming up today. Lots of sunshine and blue skies and very mild temperatures. Although we are still a couple of months from Spring, on days like this, you would think that Spring has already begun. Left - The Kefalonia ferry crosses the Strait from Sami to Piso Aetos. Below - Views from the road just outside Lefki heading south. Further Below Left - The Kefalonia docks at Piso Aetos for the 4pm arrival. The light is amazing.

After the 6.6 on the Richter earthquake a couple of days ago in Leonida in the Peloponnese, I've had some emails asking if we are all ok. The answer is yes, nothing moved here, a few people heard the rumble, but no one I've met felt the earth move. I get many enquiries about earthquakes and my answer remains the same - Greece is probably one of the safest areas to be. The earthquake proofing here is amazing as is evident with this last quake. No great damage, no injuries. In Greece, tremors are a way of life and not that frightening once you realize how well Greece withstands this natural phenomenon. Mother nature reminding us all that we are all but ants upon this great big earth no matter how small it may seem on the technological highway, and no matter how much bigger or better we believe our brains are compared to other living things, we can do nothing but submit to nature just like every other living thing when Nature decides to remind us all just who is boss.

Sat 12 Jan - Below - Early morning view from Exoghi down onto the valley.

Above - After years of being choked by overgrowth, these olive trees stand dead at the side of the road to Exoghi after the scrub that killed them was cleared due to the new laws regarding clearing of land to prevent fire danger.

Sun 13 Jan - After a period of warm(ish) and very fine weather over the past week, black skies are back today and tomorrow at least.

Thu 17 Jan - Above Left - It's a dogs life on Ithaca. Above Right - While the Kefalonia ferry undergoes its annual service, the Eptanisos, another Strintzis ferry takes over the Patras - Cephalonia - Ithaki route.

Sun 20 Jan - Above - Athens by train on a whirlwind visit. Above Right - Giorgos, Alexandros and Spiros, Vathy professionals letting down their hair on a Saturday night. Center Right - Billy and friends also enjoy a night of music and dinner in Frikes. Below Right - Music night at Piperato in Frikes with Yiannis Andrianatos on vocals. Below - The Piperato gang strike a pose inbetween courses.
Below - All the action wasn't just at Piperato in Frikes, Fiorendinos Bar was also partying hard. While friends Alexandros, Kyriakoula and Fillipa huddle up to get warm outside, inside the drinks were flowing and the music was pumping. Peter and Dini must be getting RSI with that pouring motion day in and day out.

Soon visitors from around the world will be able to pick up a great new Map of Ithaki with pics and ads on the island. So when next in Greece, have a look at what's on offer when you pick one up from the Piriptero (The Kiosks set up on the pavements all over Greece where you can buy almost anything).

Mon 21 Jan - Left - Sunrise from the Eptanisos ferry heading to Cephalonia. Above - Flying Saucers over the Ionian. Greece Invasion.
Above - Northern Ithakis football team, Odysseus, played Anagenisi in Argostoli yesterday and won 6 - 0. Goal scorers were Panos from Avra restaurant in Kioni, Nikos - electrical engineer from Lahos, Dimitris and Gerasimos. When they were on the early morning ferry before the game, they were confident of a win, but the score delighted the team.
