Wednesday 1st - From today the 'Non smoking Law in Public Places' takes full and serious effect. Greece has been playing with the law until now, but with heavy fines and penalties, the time has come for Greece to join the rest of the modern world in paying high taxes for something that's forbidden but not illegal. Left - Spavento Cafe removes its ashtrays from the bar today.

Above Left - Vathy Bay side. Above Right - A local road in Lahos. The high winds predicted for today haven't quite happened. The temp is a little cooler and the breeze fresh, but not gusts or trees blowing over today. Apart from some cloudy patches, the skies are vibrant and blue and look like they will stay like this for the rest of the day.

Thursday 2nd - It's a rare occasion when you get all the Spavento family in one photo at the same time. With the start of September, the masses have left the island and things are a little more relaxed now.

Above Left - Kioni village views. Above Right - L - R - Angela, Leon, Lachlan and Nikita are here from Melbourne Australia. The family have their roots in the Lecatsas family from Lahos, but this family is happily staying at Asterida Apartments in Stavros. For Lachlan and Nikita, it's their first time on Ithaki and although the season for the young is all but over, they are still having a great time as are their parents. After Ithaca, the family splits and heads around Europe and the Greek islands for more adventures. Below Left - Yachters dive off the Frikes pier for some recreational ball games. Below Right - Mavrona beginning to chop up under the increasing winds yesterday.

Monday 6th - Although the weather is looking like another patch of rain is coming in from Lefkada in the north today, yesterday was a brilliantly sunny and warm day. We may not be ready for the change from Summer to Autumn, but mother nature seems insistent. Below - When these 3 are having lunch together, you can be sure the Season is almost at its end. Left - A big passenger cruiser docked in Vathy this morning. It's unusual to see boats this size dropping anchor in our bays.

Saturday 4th - It looks like Summer is over. Today the skies are nothing but grey, there's rain and dreary views, but yesterday morning there was still sunshine to be had.

OH, AND THE ELECTRICITY IS OUT TOO ... battery power
Above - Weekends mean changeover for the yachts. Quiet time.

Yachts and Day Trippers are what's keeping the island populated at this time of year.

Tuesday 7th - It started off cloudy yesterday, but the weather turned before midday to make another great blue-sky day. In the north of the island, the day was quiet in regard to visitors now that the Main Season is all but over, but yachts start coming in again in the afternoon. Below - Polis Bay and beach are still a popular wet spot for northern visitors to Ithaki.

Left - It's been awhile since Nektarios and Rien from Rementzo restaurant have stood still long enough to get a photo of them, but a quiet night in Frikes last night had plenty of opportunities. You may also notice that jackets are back with cooler nights ahead.

Dimitris Danis, Ithakis entrepreneur has organized another BIG arts event in Turkey this coming October. See details below.

Dates      : October 26th – 31th / Everyday, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

“Nostos” is an ancient Greek word for homecoming. The journey back to where we belong, or back to our roots, or our memories or even to a bitter reflection of our life, or even to what we are now, the modern days, the days that we need “passwords” to move on.Nostospassword adapts the term to mean the homecoming as a return to wholeness of consciousness itself. This six-days event, which will take place at the Fransiz Sokagi Culture Center, will be fully dedicated to this journey. Paintings, Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics, Modern Dance, Fashion Design and Video Art Dimitris Vogdanis-Danis has expressed his feelings and thoughts about this event with the following sentences: “This exhibition won't have a usual opening party. In the NostosPassword Art Banquet, art-lovers will be able to experience a new mystic feeling every day. “Nostalgia” as we say in Greek, is when we let our mind go back and awake all the memories of our past, so I invite you all to come and see these works of the artists that follow their own “nostos”, their own instinct, their own journey. My expectation from this event is to create an art event that emphasizes the ideas. “So we, Dimitris Vogdanis-Danis (curator) and Sanat Tanitim are inviting you to join us in this mystic way of art presentation and to honor us and all of the participants who are involved in this Project with your presence. During this art week also special happenings will take place: First of these special happenings is the Contemporary Dance “Nostos Suitcase” by Eder Cardoso. Tonight is the Kathara Panighiri. This traditional festival starts with a church service at the Monastry and finishes with wine and food and greek music played by a dj. At this time of year it can get a little chilly at night, but it's usually a good time. See you there.

Kathara Panighiri

Tuesday 7th September 2010

A still night awaited the mostly locals or ex-pat Greeks at the Kathara Monastery. This annual religious festival is steeped in tradition for Ithacans and although the after party doesn't have a 'live' band, there is more than enough Kefi to go around. Most expected a chilly night, bringing along their padded jackets, but the temperature high up on the mountain was actually quite mild and made for a very pleasant time. Click Here or on Photograph below for more pics.

Friday 10th - Another beautiful weather day until late in the afternoon when clouds began to form in the skies over Ithaki. In the north of Greece there is rain predicted, but I doubt we'll see much of it here. For now, let's enjoy the sunshine and sunburn.

Nidri Star Day Tripper brings in eager and hungry visitors.

Right - Marina Sikiotis gets a quick pic in with Nektarios and Poppy in Friks before she leaves Ithaki for another year. Marina is a summer local from Stavros. Below - A frequent past time is people watching around Kaiki time. The Nidri Star Day Tripper always has an interesting lot coming off the boat.
Right - This time of year is perfect for walking, although mid afternoon was still very hot, despite the threat of the changing weather. Below - Anoghi locals wait for the local doctor.

Saturday 11th - A change in weather today. It's not cold, but there is alot of rain, especially in Vathy. Distant thunder warns for a 'heavy sky' day. Below - Yesterday the winds picked up and Polis beach was empty.
