March 2013 - Wednesday 20th  - Starting a new page today with the cold and grey of these past weeks, hopefully left behind. It's such a pleasant and almost completely sunny day, mild temps, wild flowers blooming on the road sides and the feel of Spring in the air, that we all need a bright spot right about now.

Stavros playground is a pleasant meeting place for the mums of the northern island to wait for the school bell to ring.

Over the winter months, Frikes isn't exactly a very inviting village. It's usually dark and cold and quite damp, but as the weather opens up, Frikes turns into a beautiful and enticing bayside village. Aqua waters, green hills and colourful buildings.
Local business owners are beginning to open up their premises to get them ready for the 2013 Season. Soon we'll have sunny days again, being enjoyed by the waterfront over lunch or a drink with our beautiful Ithacan views, reminding us of the paradise we live in.

Friday 22nd - It's been blowing a gale since late last night, churning up the seas around us. Afales is particularly spectacular. When the wind blows hard, the water turns a bright aqua with milky waves washing onto shore.

In Vathy, the bay exploded from it's boundaries, slashing waves and water bursts into the air. A big thank you to Perahori local and photographer, Makis Raptis who occasionally let's me use a photo or two that he has taken. It's a great help as I can't be 2 places at once.

Mid afternoon, the wind began to die down a bit. We're all breathing a little sigh of relief, as with an earlier power-cut, more wind could have us in the dark tonight. I'm not the only one wondering why every time is blows and rains, the power goes out. Quite strange. It's never happened so often before.

Monday 25th - Ithaca woke to a wild, wild wind day. The ferry stayed in the port of Vathy and freights, settled themselves in a safe harbour.

Today Greece celebrated Independence Day and Ithaca included itself in those celebrations with parades in Stavros and Vathy. For more pics of both the Stavros and Vathy parades, CLICK HERE or on photograph Left.

The winds eased off after midday and the parade, but before then, it was really churning up the seas around Ithaki.

Saturday 30th - The end of another month tomorrow, Things are a little quiet around the place as we wait for the weather to become more stable. A nice day today, albeit a little windy, but more rain on the horizon.

Left - The winds were really churning up Polis Bay, usually a calm and serene waterside. Today surf was up.

Above - Krouvoulia One beach, a pristine little cove between Frikes and Kioni, was sheltered from the winds. The water actually looked inviting enough for a swim.

When there's wind, the water around Ithaki just seems to burst into aqua. A warm 23 degree C day has quite a few more people working outside, walking, enjoying the sunshine and the heat.

In Frikes, the first yacht has come in. It looks a little lonely there, and I'm sure with the village not quite ready for visitors, they may feel a little lonelier before the day is over. If they make their way around to Libro D'oro, they could get some home made waffles and good company from Gerry Kavadias, the new owner of the cafe bar. He's ready to start the season even if the rest of Frikes isn't just yet.

Rementzo Restaurant in Frikes will be opening it's doors for the season on the 1st April. I'm sure the northern island is waiting anxiously for that. Fiorendino Cafe Bar has been open most of the winter, so you can always get along there in the evenings for a laugh, some music and of course, drinks.

Springtime is my favourite time on Ithaca. I just love the colours, the sounds... Everything seems to be waking up and blossoming and blooming all over the place.

Left - Lahos is a sleepy little village in the north of Ithaca. It's not a big tourist destination, yet visitors to Ithaca just love staying in the area because of it's traditional feel and friendly community. Not everything needs a sea view to be enjoyed.
