Good Friday The Resurrection Easter Sunday 1 2
With Greek Easter a month later than usual, no one was rugged up in their winter woollies and there were no umbrella's on hand. A very mild night, albeit the wind did pick up a little. Church services with the Epitaph at the center of each, went on all around the island. Good Friday begins the long Easter weekend. In Kioni, Judas burned, as he does annually, but I gave him a break this year, opting instead to include only the forgiving side of religion. A bonus for this year was that due to Easter falling in the first week of May, many visitors to the island got to take a peek at the authentic Greece.
In Kioni the congregation paraded around the bayside, following the Epitaph, chanting and singing. On the pier, the red flames lit up the night sky, illuminating the masts of the yachts which had come into port for the night. After the liturgy and parade, people made their way home, or to Spavento Bar in Kioni, which usually stays open until the early hours, aiding and abetting the Easter celebrations, or to one of the other cafes and bars around the island. Easter is a time of celebration. It's the BIG occasion on the Greek social calendar.
