Well, the weather couldn't have been more perfect for this year's Oxi Day celebrations. What could have been more perfect was the 'timing'. The northern Ithacan celebrations in Stavros, ran a little later than expected and the southern celebrations started earlier than usual, so I unfortunately missed the parade in Stavros and in Vathy, well almost. I did catch the very last round in Vathy...luckily!
The sun was shining, the skies were blue, and it was good to remember the days when Oxi achieved something good for Greece. All the kids were dressed in their blue and white with flags flying and anthems and church services celebrating Oxi for another year. The northern Ithacan community had a small, but enthusiastic turn out. Mums and dads proudly looking on as the children led the memorium of this day.
The hour long service had some of the kids a little jittery by the end of it, but most hung in there with great patience.
There is a deep rooted respect for these past glories in both young and old in Greece. It is in the populations' DNA.
