Jane Cochrane (below) paints from life, working in the European tradition of observational painters, relying on colour, tone and form in an attempt to capture the wonder and excitement of the visual world.
Jane Cochrane has exhibited her paintings of Ithaca at the Hellenic Center in London four times. To her Ithaca is an enchanted island. The light, the atmosphere, the ever-changing sea, the green hills, the people and their history, make it a place of magic.
In her paintings she attempts to unlock some of that enchantment and express it in a way in which others, perhaps far from Ithaca, can absorb.
July 2014 - Sunday 13th - Over the next weeks Jane Cochrane is exhibiting her oil paintings at the old school in Kioni. For anyone wanting to see the exhibition after this week, they can see Jennie at Spavento Cafe Bar in Kioni and she will open up for all interested.
There was an excellent turn out for the opening of the exhibition which was helped along by some of the Kioni community. Jennie (above) will be happy to open up the exhibition for anyone interested. Just contact her via Spavento Cafe Bar in Kioni.
Monday 14th - Surprisingly, it's still not as busy on Ithaca as it has been other years, and although that's not great for business, it is great for visitors who have lucked out, having so much of this wonderful island without the summer rush.
Tuesday 15th - Not a good start to the day yesterday with a fire in Mesa Lahos. Luckily Ithaki's fire brigade is on the ball and the fire was extinguished before it could spread to neighbouring properties. It is a red flag for us all to keep our land clear of scrub and overgrown dry grass, and to not toss cigarette buts from our car windows or mopeds. Our beautiful island can quickly turn black.
Wednesday 16th - A day from the Exoghi Panighiri and we have stormy skies. How very, very strange. This is the first time since I've been coming to Ithaca that it has rained and stormed during July. The storm yesterday didn't last very long, by midday it was hot and the skies were mostly blue again. Let's hope we have some warm(ish) summer nights now that we are in the Panighiri season.
