September 2018

Saturday 1st - We may have come to the other side of the Peak Season, but there are still lots of people around and more coming through this next month. Our weather this year has been unusual to say the least, as it has in the northern part of the continent and of course the UK, but for today, it looks perfect, just like Greek weather should be.

Sunday 2nd - Deep in the plateau of Anoghi, the 1st of September was celebrated by the Moraiti family with some invited friends over for a spit roast and bbq. In amidst rocks and wild olive groves, there was laughter and wine.

Tuesday 4th - Yesterdays transport strike, which includes ferries around Greece Has played havoc with visitors arrivals and departures, but luckily today ferries are running again as scheduled.

Thursday 6th - Below - The south of Ithaca has some natural beauty of it's own on offer in the area of Sarachiniko and Filiatro with pristine beaches and rugged and lush hills.

Sunday 9th - I didn't make it up to Kathara festival this year due to a migraine, but the word is it was again a spectacular church service, although the after celebrations were a little quieter this year.

Saturday 15th - The kids are back at school and the season is slowly winding down now. That's not to say that the island is suddenly empty. It isn't. It is more comfortably busy now.

Above - Snorkelling around the bays while it's not so heavy with yachting traffic can see the fish life return.

Sunday 16th - Today there was a cooler breeze blowing, reminding us that the season is changing slowly.

Ithaca Greece Summer Fun

Saturday 1st

I love this island, but it can be quite frustrating to watch the short term goals overrule the long term impacts on this precious environment. While everyone is busy trying to make a living, sometimes the good of the future of this island is overlooked. I actually remember when i would go to Krouvoulia and be able to pick a bright red star fish from the water, A time not so long ago, that every rock was covered in sea urchins and little fishes would swim inbetween my toes. I know for some it's more convenient to not collide with nature, they'd prefer the sea to be more like a swimming pool, but there's a price to pay for that. It's no secret that we humans can impact quite negatively on the environment, I hope there are some who have 'a say', watching out we don't devastate the reason people come to the island in the first place.

Sunday 2nd - The first day of the month was a scorcher! Looks like a hot month ahead.

Tuesday 4th - Into the last big month of the season. During this time, things calm down a bit to a more comfortable pace.

Thursday 6th - There's a new light over Ithaca. A changing season.

Sunday 9th - I think everyone's had a pretty successful season so far, and with September still bringing in lots of visitors, Ithaca could well see it's way out of the previous years slump.
