August 2019

Wednesday 14th

Big night in Anoghi tonight for the Anoghi Panighiri. It's been a packed Summer of activities and festivals with lots and lots of people here. I don't think I've ever seen so many visitors on the island at one time.

Below - Last night Frikes car park turned into a meeting with entertainment to promote the plight of locals and activists against drilling and fracking for oil in the Ionian. There were so many visitors on the island that are unfortunately not aware that their holiday paradise could soon be overtaken by the destruction that is the petrochemical industry, that it was a shame there was no translation or invitation for them to get involved. This is such a worthwhile cause that it needs some promotion that would spread this around to everyone that will at some point be effected.

Thursday 15th - So, so, so many people on the island right now, makes me wonder how this rock copes with all the footprints.

Above - Film maker, Jason Raftopoulos (West of Sunshine) has his roots firmly planted in Frikes on Ithaca where having some quality time with his son is made so much easier.

Last night the Anoghi Panighiri lasted into the early hours of the morning. It started off a bit quiet, but at around 2am, the crowds really started packing into the village square. Click Here or on photograph below for more pics of last night's festival on Ithaca Greece.

Last night was the biggest Platrithia Panighiri that I've seen in many, many years. CLICK HERE or on photo below for more photographs of this spectacular night. The local volunteers who helped with the food and behind the bar had their work cut out for them. Bravo tous!

Sunday 18th - Traditionally the Platrithia Panighiri marks the end of high summer and people start to go back to their ordinary working lives, but it doesn't look like it so far. Still lots of visitors and mainlanders here on Ithaki.

Below - A new restaurant/Cafe has opened up in Exoghi. It was closed when i went up to see, so I can't tell you anything other than that the location is beautiful and this will open up Exoghi to more people I'm sure.

Above - View from the road to Exoghi down onto Platrithia and Afales Bay.

Tuesday 20th - Perfect Summer weather. Still lots and lots of people roaming our village streets as you'll see in pics below.

Summer Holiday on Ithaca Greece

Wednesday 14th

The weather has been a bit disappointing,

Below - Meeting against oil drilling and fracking in the Ionian. Unfortunately there were many missed opportunities with this meeting, but I still urge everyone to get involved. We can't let this dirty industry wreck our pristine environment. Surely we have to care enough and organize ourselves enough to stop this if we want Greece to prosper in real ways for the people who actually work and live here instead of an industry whose managers are far from the reality of this area. For ways to help see Poppy at Rementzo Restaurant in Frikes and Jennie at Spavento Bar in Kioni.

Thursday 15th -

Tuesday 20th - Below - Around Vathy
