December 2019

Sunday 1st

Looks like more of the same for December. Rainy and stormy days. It's not that cold though, so the dramatic skies can be beautiful.

Wednesday 4th - Another rainy day on Ithaca, but those stormy skies are fantastic to warch rolling over the island.

Saturday 7th - Sunshine again with holiday spirit in the air.

Sunday 8th - Whether the sun shines or not, at this time of year, Ithacans are out in their olive groves for the olive harvest. Ithacan olives can end up in a meze but more often than not, it's made into very delicious cold pressed virgin olive oil, right here on Ithaca.

Tuesday 10th - With mostly rain again today, it's easy to forget that Ithaca usually has alot of sunshine, even at this time of year.

Wednesday 11th - Yesterdays heavy rain flooded quite alot of the island. Rivers running in Frikes, waterlogged bayside streets and beyond in Vathy.

Thursday 12th - So much rain lately it makes it difficult to harvest the olives or get any work done outside.

Above - Traditionally, Greeks decorate their boats at Christmas as opposed to a tree, but over the past 15 - 20 years, the tree tradition has also been taken on.

Saturday 14th - More rain again today after a brief period of sunshine yesterday. It's been one for the record books this year.

Monday 16th - We had some sunshine again yesterday. What a relief. The record rainfall is wearing us out.

Thursday 19th - All the rain has left the island lush and green.

Winter on Ithaca Greece

Sunday 1st

Wednesday 4th - Yes, there's rain, but there has also been sunshine some days and temperature wise, Ithaca is quite mild in comparison to winters elsewhere.

Saturday 7th - Below - Christmas trees in Vathy and Stavros.

Sunday 8th - As we near one of the most festive seasons in the world, let's remember that not all will be celebrating. There are families struggling to give their children food let alone Christmas presents. The School community of Ithaca is collecting clothings, toys and food for those who not only Santa, but often the world, forgets.

Tuesday 10th - Below - On Wednesday 18th December, the Stavros Primary School community will be holding a Bazaar in the Stavros park. There'll be all kinds of nic nacs for sale, also music and other surprises. Get along, buy up big and support out small and struggling school community so that Ithaki's kids can learn with all the bells and bobs city children can learn with.

Wednesday 11th - With all the rain we've had, the island is lush and green.

Thursday 12th - Below - An open invitation from The Odysseas Society.

Usually the traditional cutting of the pie (cake) to bring in the New Year, is free, so if this price tag is a bit high for you, the Ithaca Council, as well as various other Ithacan community bodies, will also be having a ceremony for this tradition. The Odysseas Society needs funding and this is a way of keeping the society afloat and also the discussions around Odysseas.

Saturday 14th - Another rainy, rainy day.

Monday 16th

Thursday 19th - After weeks of rain, the past few days have been very mild with lots of sunny breaks.
