July 2019

Monday 1st

Although Ithaki's temperatures hover around and just under the 30C mark, it definitely feels like around 36C most days.

Wednesday 3rd - Ithaca Greece is some gorgeous island folks. If you haven't been, it's time you booked a ticket.

Thursday 4th - Some very hot weather has forced the clouds closer to the earth. A still and sticky Hani as we head down the mountain to Vathy.

Summer means pleasure cruises. Day Trippers tread our pavements several times a day as they make their way around the Ionian.

A busy late afternoon in Kioni. Cocktail hours and cooler temperatures tempt people from their siestas into the village and baysides.

Saturday 6th - Just a breath away from the end of the first week of July and things are really heating up both on the ground and from the Sun.

Monday 8th - On hot summer days, there's no better place to sit than on the bayside of Frikes, where a cooling breeze makes you feel human again. Seeing you're on the bayside, why not drop in to Odysseus taverna for some lunch after a swim.

Below - Sofias place in Anoghi is a special place for dinner. Book and order what you want before you come or be happy with what's left over after a busy night. A thoroughly traditional night out, completely satisfying.

Wednesday 10th - Hot days ahead.

Summer Holiday on Ithaca Greece

Monday 1st

Everything revolves around the baysides and beaches during July and August.

Wednesday 3rd - Something about the heat these past few years. The temperatures forecast do not reflect the real feel. It always feels hotter than what the thermometer says.

There seem to be many, many more yachts in Vathy Bay this year. It is a wonderfully picturesque place to drop anchor so it's no wonder the bay is so alive with yachting activity.

Above - What's going on with these legs?  Something doesn't look right about this.

Many more catamarans coming into the bays now and with the number of flags we sure hope no country has been left out.

Thursday 4th - Some people only get to see Summer through their window panes working from offices, shops and banks.

Saturday 6th - You'll see some signs around the island this Summer declaring we don't want oil drilling in our area. The Ithaki Council formally says 'NO' to drilling as do the dedicated locals who don't want to risk the Ionian sea for a minimal monetary gain for Greece. You can find out more from Jennie Vlassopoulos at Spavento Cafe Bar in Kioni who has much information to share if you're interested. I can pretty much guess those who love Ithaca will hate oil rigs in our view, risking spills that would devastate the Ionian and the livelihood of the community which lives primarily off tourism. Don't put Ithaca in a Cage

We come to Ithaca for what is different, special;
It has a certain magic.
We come for the history and mythology
To feel connected to the great body of the human past.
We come for the steep cliffs and mountains,
To walk the old paths and find our way.
We come for the tumbled rocks and the smooth beach pebbles
To feel connected to the great body of the planet's past.
We come not only for the summer blue and gold,
But the searing sun, the tearing winds and the crashing storms
To feel connected to what wildness is left in us.

So why have they brought the stakes and steel
To drill and hammer and fix a cage of wire across the face of Ithaca?
In case a rock may fall?
If what you have is wild and free
Why tame it?
Why chain it?
Don't put Ithaca in a cage!

Thank you to Sarah F. for sending in this poem that will resonate with many on Ithaca.

Monday 8th - There are so many great places to eat on Ithaca, you really can't go wrong with wherever you choose be it in Vathy, Lefki, Stavros, Frikes or Kioni, there'll be something that will entice your tastebuds.

Below - After dinner at Sofia's place in Anoghi, Mihalis can take you around the chapel there and explain the history and meaning of the very old frescos on these church walls. The Anoghi chapel is the oldest on the island.
