August 2020

Wednesday 12th

While some parts of Greece are again suffering under restrictions, Ithaca is still virus free and have so far been spared the precautionary measure put on other islands.

Saturday 15th - The days seem a little quiet with everyone at the beach, but at night, the restaurants are full. Not alot of people walking around, I guess everyone has only as much contact as they feel comfortable with.

Wednesday 19th - You may have heard that Greece is under more restrictions, but it's not All of Greece, only certain areas. The Ionian islands, except for Corfu (Kerkyra) have been spared the tighter restrictions as we don't have any cases. This is both good news and bad news. As Ithaca doesn't have any cases, it can mean that more tourists, Greek and International, may flock here, as they already have, because it's a safe place to holiday.

Friday 21st - Below - Spyros Kavallieratos (Right) from Ithaca Transfers takes some time out for lunch in Kioni.

Above - Waiting for the money to sail in. There are so many businesses around tourism, not just the restaurants and cafes, accommodation and gift shops, but water and fuel deliveries, organizing food and drink and anything else that may be delivered or organized for the big yachts. Every corner of tourism has a niche to make an income.

A Covid Summer on Ithaca Greece

Wednesday 12th

There have been some busy nights around the restaurants. Ithaca appears to be a haven for wellness both emotionally and physically.

Saturday 15th - Hot days luckily end with a refreshing sea breeze at night. Police patrol the streets to make sure everyone is wearing a mask that should be, but I have a better idea than fining people. How about they hand out free masks. That might actually help the situation instead of aggravating it.

Wednesday 19th - Despite Covid, this August on Ithaca is busier than ever, but that might change over the next few days with news out of the UK that Greece may be put on the list of places which will require quarantine when returning from here back to the UK. There may be a rush to get out before that happens.

Friday 21st - For those who were worried about how they would make their businesses work this Summer, August has proved that worry was unnecessary. I have never seen the beaches so packed with people, or the restaurants so full.

With popular islands such as Mykonos and Santorini under more restrictions, I guess the knowledge that Ithaca has no cases of covid19 has swayed the usual Aegean holidayers onto the Ionian side. Lots more Greek tourists this year than other years. With the news that there may  be a possible quarantine restriction on return to the UK, Brits have fled Greece so they don't get caught with a mandatory 2 week quarantine on their return.
