Winter on Ithaca Greece

Monday 1st

I have to say, being on Ithaca is probably one of the best places to be in Greece right now, in terms of restrictions and covid rules, except for the fact the main road has still not been fixed or even started on. Locals are becoming restless with this divide between south and north.

Wednesday 3rd - Some nice weather again. Already has that feeling of Spring in the air. Now we just need it in our step.

Thursday 4th - As I've mentioned a few times before, the road at Aetos has split the island in two. The road has been a problem for years, but after last years storm, Ianos, the damage caused then has finally put the last nail in it's coffin. The problem is, the road needs fixing quickly and it's not getting fixed. A small ferry has been put on which runs from Frikes to Vathy, but it can only travel in mild weather. Locals are protesting the state of things and are urging our local representatives to push forward the fixing of the road as a matter of paramount importance. Protestors firstly want the road fixed and in the interim, have a ferry that is not so limited by the weather and that free transport is provided from Tsiribis, where the ferry docks in Vathy, into the town.

Saturday 6th - As one of the strictest lockdowns in the world continues with no end in sight, we get by on what we can. With new strains discovered all the time, we wonder if it will ever end and to further complicate things, we have the impassable road at Aetos which also separates us.

Monday 8th - The start of another week with little changing on the island.

Friday 12th - The chill that's gripped the UK and northern countries is due here next week with big temperature drops and snow forecast even in Attika. Best enjoy the mild temps while we can.
