June 2018

Sunday 17th Continued - With the storms over the past few days there's been a bit of a drop in temperature, but nothing too drastic. It's actually a nice relief to have a cooler night for sleeping.

It's always interesting walking the back streets of Vathy, Ithaki's capital.

Above - Many tour groups come to the island, giving lessons on Ithaki's history and myth. Forkys Bay here, is of course the place where Odysseas sailed back into after decades away on his lurid adventures.

Monday 18th - Ithaca is finally waking up after a sleepy winter, with familiar and happy faces gracing our island again. Visitors the locals know as well as the locals, coming to the island again and again, some for decades.

I'm happy to say that some of the absolute best people in the world come and visit Ithaca, they love the island with a passion that is not even surpassed by the locals.

Visitors coming from all corners of the world, from distant Australia to those just across the channel in the UK. No matter where visitors to ithaca hail from, their love for the island is always evident in the passion they show for the place.

Tuesday 19th - Bulletin Boards around the island are still the main form of communicating events and important notices.

Above - Another dark sky heading for Ithaki, but nothing really eventuated.

Below - A special early evening light across the Vathy Bayside makes for a romantic night on Ithaca. There are special places to eat such as Sirens Restaurant just behind the bayside and Kohili near the Council building on the bayside.

This beautiful old building was restored and renovated a couple of years ago, only to be left unattended again. Shame.

Below - Last evening the Musical Society of Meizones and Elassones Arts presented their students and their musical achievements in a performance at La Nona in Vathy. For more information and pics CLICK HERE or on photograph below

Thursday 21st - A bit overcast and cloudy today, but warm and very, very still.

Saturday 23rd - Summer is high time for the cats on the island. The best feeds they'll get all year.

Above - Jennie from Spavento is a bit of an institution in Kioni. Her big smile and enthusiastic laughter always makes her customers feel welcome and secure in the knowledge that they will be remembered.
Below - Another institution is the mini market in Kioni. I remember when it was stacked to the ceiling with everything you could want, shoes, goggles, hats, food, fish etc, back in the early 80's, a little like Farouks in Stavros then, but now it's a mega for food and deli products. Kioni couldn't be without it. The mini market not only services the locals in the area, but also the flotillas and accommodations in the village. Aleka still shows her face but her son Panos now holds the reigns, and what an excellent job he does.

Ithaca Greece Summer Fun

Sunday 17th

Monday 18th - The Music School, Meizones and Elassones Arts are presenting a Summer concert of their talented music students tonight at La Nona (Behind the Council Building) in Vathy. Entrance is free and it starts at 7pm. Please head along to see and support some of Ithaki's talented children of all ages.

Below - The traditional village of Lahos where life goes on without tourism, yet it's become one of the favourite villages to rent or buy a house in. Only 10 minute walk to the Frikes Bayside.

Below - Another village not immediately associated with tourism on Ithaca, yet it's loved by the visitors who come to the island for it's eco friendly accommodations and produce, Perahori.

Below - Raxi

Below - Platrithia is made up of several northern Ithacan villages and is the location of the last big Summer Festival, the Platrithia Panighiri, held at Limnes each year.

Below - Ag. Maria church is need of restoration after the last damaging earth quake. It's a shame to let this beautiful church sit around un-needed and unused.

Tuesday 19th - La Nona Presents Infinity. Documentary on the subject by Director Christopher Robin Collins who will be premiering this feature first in Greece and on Ithaca. After the film, join in on  a discussion with the director and share your thoughts. Showing for 2 nights - 20th and 21st of June. Complimentary wine. Doors open at 9pm.

La Nona is located behind the Council Building (the one with the clock) in Vathy.

There's a golden light shining down on the bayside of Vathy when the clock strikes 8pm. Vathy has hordes of visitors in comparison to the north of the island, where the visitors are thinner on the ground.

Yesterday evening I went along to La Nona, where a special performance of the Syllogos Meizones and Elassones Arts, where children of all ages and qualifications, played for an attentive and proud audience. Pics to come soon. Stay tuned.

Thursday 21st - Don't forget to head along to La Nona in Vathy behind the council building (clock) to see Infinity, the documentary about the subject with discussion afterwards with the director.

Saturday 23rd - Below - just some of the goodness you'll find at Pantopoleion in Kioni, Kioni's mini market.

Above - Get too tired to walk up the hill from Polis Beach? Then don't worry, it's easy and VERY safe to get a lift from a local. Still one of the rare places in the world you don't have to worry about hitching a ride.
