April 2019

Monday 1st

Above - Homers School in the north of Ithaca could use some love, but from this aspect it's always been perfect.

It's a great time to do some walks around the island. Wild flowers and soft lush carpets of grass.

Tuesday 2nd - At the last meeting on Ithaca re-drilling for oil, it was stated that Fracting is also planned. This would really devastate not only the sea, but the land in Greece. If you don't know what fracting is, google it, there are horror stories from all over the world and some places have managed to stop it. I'm sorry that ithacagreece.com has to spoil the holiday season vibe by talking about this, but if we don't get behind this and make our cases for 'NO' then there won't be an ithacagreece nor will there be a Greece of any note. I know this sounds a bit melodramatic but we have something so precious here that our governments are not recognizing for the lure of the euro. Please please please find a way to help Greece by contacting whoever you can. There are petitions, but I fear they don't speak loud enough.

Next meeting to organize movements against drilling for oil and fracting will be held on Sunday 7th April at the Stavros Community Hall at 6.30pm. Please show your support if you're on the island and if not, I know there are zillions of ways you can make yourselves counted online.

Thursday 4th - Last year the walking trails were sign posted and cleared so now it's even easier to take those walks independently if wanted, but if not, there are plenty of walking guides around the island to go along with.

Monday 8th - Last night the Northern Ithaca community turned out for the information night on drilling for oil and fracking in the Ionian, with proposed sites and refineries very close to our shores. If you're someone who is not informed about what Fracking is, just put it into youtube and you'll get lots of information and docs on it. You can weigh it up for yourself, but the consenses in areas that HAVE fracking is that the short term financial benefits are not worth the long term effects and continued risks to health, water and the environment. Below are some pics of the meeting in Stavros.

It's a serious subject so I won't apologize for including it into ithacagreece.com If we close our eyes to it, this site may become irrelevant. We want you to come here and smell the fresh air, swim in the clear waters, not inhale fumes and a dead sea.

Tuesday 9th - What's so special about ithacagreece.com? Was the question and the answer is, well there are many things, but one we are most proud of is that it's been and continues to be an archive of the island since 2003 with regular updates, news and images, done without payment or any financial benefit. A labour of love. We hope to continue it through this year. Stay with us as we make history. I don't believe there are any other sites that chronical an entire island for so many years.

Below - Perahori in the south of Ithaca Greece.

Above - Heading out of Vathy toward Marathia in the south of Ithaki.

Saturday 13th - The island is getting busy now, preparing for the season. There's painting and fixing and cleaning away the winter going on.

Above - The beautiful old palace in Stavros. It needs alot of work, but this could be someone's palace again. It's for sale and you can get all the details here: https://www.ithacagreece.com/Real Estate/contact.html

Sunday 14th - Varied and interesting skies and light across the island at this time of year. Just a note that restaurants on the bayside in the north of Ithaca have started to open again after a winter hiatus, giving the early season visitors a place to enjoy.

Springtime on Ithaca Greece

Monday 1st

Tuesday 2nd - You must agree that Greece is far too beautiful to spoil. We can't ruin everything for a dollar. It's not right. Help Greece avoid the plague of fracting and drilling that has devastated communities all over the world, especially those which have no voice. We've just come out of an economic nightmare for most and our future should be brighter not doused in oil.

Thursday 4th - Signs of Spring are everywhere. If you're on the island, take some of the walks that have been recently sign posted. You won't regret it. Roussano is one of the great walks from around the island.

Monday 8th - More rain yesterday, but it was sunny before and it will be again. It is Spring afterall.

Tuesday 9th - Weather acting a little strange as we head toward Greek Easter, the biggest day of the Greek Social Calendar.

Saturday 13th

Sunday 14th - Already half way through April and so we're quickly heading toward the biggest celebration day on the Greek Social Calendar, Greek Easter. If you're on the island, see if you can get yourself invited to the dinner table. It's a feast and celebration worth experiencing.
