April 2019

Tuesday 16th

Exciting new arrivals to Anoghi, Ithaca yesterday. 7 beautiful horses for the new holiday activity the Moraitis family is offering this year - Horse Riding at Doyreis Horse Riding.

Friday 19th - Yesterday the lights went out around Taxiarchis for the morning while a repair on the lines was being done.

With Easter just around the corner, the ligurgy schedules are up. They'll be pasted on the church walls, doors and wherever they stick.

Sunday 21st - Those woolly coats and scarves are mostly gone now. We're heading into the warm season. Although with the north of the UK basking under 28C yesterday, makes you wonder whether the sun is heading north.

Tuesday 23rd - Cafe Del Sol has been sold and new owner Haris will be keeping the name, but adding his flare to the business. Head along and welcome him to the bayside when you're next in Vathy.

Wednesday 24th - On Monday night the Council unanimously voted on getting behind the NO OIL and FRACKING in Greece.

The head of the prefecture for Kefalonia and Ithaca spoke at the meeting. The municipality of Ithaca voted unanimously opposing any Mining or drilling for oil, gas and minerals in the Ionian. The money Greece would make from mining would be a pittance in comparison to the tourism euro. The only ones it benefits are the oil companies and you don't need to be a scholar or educated in finance or economics or geology to know that oil companies do NOT care about environment. It's the dollar only. I'm happy to say that Ithaca will be opposing, and so it should, we are located in a very active earthquake zone. Just read about fracking for instance, anywhere, you'll see there have been earthquakes in areas that have never experienced an earthquake before, so just imagine what it would do here. Please sign the petition and help anywhere else you can. We need everyone behind it.

Friday 26th - With the big Easter weekend coming up, the ferries are full. It didn't help that there was no ferry on Tuesday with 9 BF winds keeping everything docked. Wednesday, the ferry from Patras was fuller than I've ever witnessed it. The lines of passengers waiting to get on was massive, and for some people, there was standing room only once on the ferry. The weather was slightly better than Tuesday with 7BF, but it was a pretty rocky ride. Everyone arrived safe on Ithaki. With works at the port there is always a bit of chaos getting on and off, but hopefully some of this will clear before the Summer season starts.

Saturday 27th - Last night Kioni burnt Judas at the stake for the Good Friday celebrations on this Greek Easter weekend. Click Here or on photograph below for more pics.

Sunday 28th - Last night's Resurrection celebrations around the island had Ithaca exploding with fire crackers and fire works. For some pics of the celebration in Stavros Click Here or on Photo below.

Monday 29th - Yesterday Ithaca, along with the rest of Greece, celebrated Easter Sunday, the biggest feasting celebration on the Greek Social Calendar. Click Here or on photograph below for some pics of the day. Again, I want to thank the families who allowed us a peak into their lives to share it with you.

Tuesday 30th - Another warm and sunny day for this year's Greek Easter weekend. Today we headed up to Anoghi where the Moraitis family opened up their farm for a day of food, wine and activities. Click Here or on Photograph below for some pics.

Spring on Ithaca Greece

Tuesday 16th

Friday 19th - Below - A view down to Marmakas from the top of the mountain.

Sunday 21st - Spring is a great time on Ithaca. Next week Greece has it's big Easter celebration, but we wish all those celebrating today to have a great day.

Tuesday 23rd

Wednesday 24th - Yesterday the wind blew in from Africa and turned the blue Ionian brown.

Friday 26th - Still more wind from Africa dropping red sandy dirt all over the Ionian. The small amounts of rain really stick it onto everything. Cars look like they've been rally driving.

Tonight there is the ritual burning of Judas in Kioni for Good Friday, and it may be an idea to take ear muffs, the fire cracker parade is out in force, exploding crackers whenever the opportunity arrives. It's the one thing that ruins it for me, but as there is no law being enforced as in other countries, this continues here.
