February 2020

Saturday 1st

Kalo Mina to everyone. Already into the 2nd month of 2020. Below - Vathy Square almost a century ago. It actually hasn't changed that much. The square was extended into the bay in the 80's to include a road. The area you see is where all the cafes are set up now. Even the tree infront of the post office is still there.

Above - Kalivia, just outside of Stavros looking down onto Polis Bay.

Sunday 2nd - Last night was the Eve of Papandis celebrated in Kioni, where local women baked bread to offer in the church. Click Here or on photograph below for a few more pics of the evening.

Below - The guys from Laertes Farm, the Fruit and Vegie Mart in Stavros. One of Ithacagreece.com's long time patrons. You can find their website here: Laertes Farm

Above - Afrodite from Kanenas Restaurant serving locals. It's great to see businesses stay open during the winter months, especially in the north of Ithaca, where there isn't always the business that would keep them going financially. You can see Kanenas website here by Clicking Here.

Tuesday 4th - Last Saturday, Ithaki's Folk Dance Group, Xarilaos Tsigonias, celebrated the beginning of 2020 with the Cutting of the Pita, the traditional start to a fruitful and healthy new year. For more pics Click Here or on photograph below.

Thursday 6th - A change in the weather brings more rain. Looks like our Indian Summer may be over. With climate all over the globe changing so radically, who knows what the weather man will forecast next. Below - Dendra views.

Above - View to Exoghi from Pilikata, just outside of Stavros.

Friday 7th - After the some more stormy weather, the skies have cleared to a crisp blue. There's a definite winter chill in the air, but it's nice.

Saturday 8th - Looking down onto Platrithias and Afales from the road to Exoghi.

Above - With all the rain, there'll need to be alot of land clearing this Spring in order to avoid fire danger. If you own a piece of land on Ithaca, do the right thing and get it cleared. The island is too small to burn down because of an oversight.

Above - There's not much traffic on the road (mind I wrote road, not roads) but with a dusk as beautiful as this, it's a good thing there isn't any traffic. Sometimes you just need to stop to admire.

Tuesday 10th - It's been a very mild winter through the first bit of 2020. No snow thus far, but lots of blue skies.

Thursday 13th - It doesn't feel like winter at all. In Athens it reached 22C yesterday and here wasn't far behind. If the weather is enthusing you to get out and do something, you might want to consider some Greek Dancing. You do? Well then head on over to the Stavros Community Hall on Wednesdays between 6 and 7pm where Pelina from Vathy is giving Greek dance lessons. Only 15 euro. For kids I believe it's 10 euro and their lesson starts at 5pm and goes until 6pm. Below - the crystal clea waters of Ithaca Greece's Ionian.

Below - Kioni from near the windmills.

Above - Ithaca's capital, Vathy. Below - The quiet village of Frikes. It's only quiet in Winter, in Summer it's full of action both on the sea and on land.

Sunday 2nd - Winter views

Tuesday 4th - We're having a bit of an Indian Summer right in the middle of what should be, the coldest time of Winter.

Above - Kioni with Agalaio climbing up the hill top above this most picturesque seaside village in the Ionian.

Above - A view across to Pilikata, just outside of Stavros, one of the oldest sites on Ithaca, beyond to Frikes Bay in the distance.

Thursday 6th - With so much rain at the end of last year, all the fruit trees are bearing an extraordinary amount of fruit.

Friday 7th - Some early signs of Spring in the fields and on the trees. Blue skies after rain always makes for a happy winter.

Below - Vathy Bay. Always stunning no matter which angle you see it from.

I just love the traditional. We can get modern anywhere.

Saturday 8th - Not much going on in the north of the island on the surface, but there's still the school run and local activities.

Below - The Almond blossoms have begun.

Below - Vathy under the orange dusk sky.

Tuesday 10th - With Greek Easter coming early this year, so do all the pre-Easter celebrations such as Carnival and Clean Monday. Carnival is on this coming Sunday, 16th of February.

Thursday 13th - Ithaca is lush and green, and with all the signs of Spring in our very mild temperatures, the island also begins to blossom.

If dance lessons aren't your thing, but you would like to do something, then you can get some art lessons in Stavros from Tommy Dendrinou. Tommy is also a very talented actress and a cast member of Ithaca's Theatre Group, Forkys, who gives a performance annually for locals and visitors alike.

Don't forget the start of Carnival is on this coming Sunday in Vathy. Start time is listed as 11.30am. Things will start hotting up as we head toward the Carnival Parade on 1st March.
