June 2020

Saturday 20th

It's definitely a strange Season this year. It will be a year to remember, or maybe the year we should forget. Businesses are open mostly, although some have decided to stay shut this year, especially accommodations. The requirements to be open are just too insurmountable for some. It's quite sad to see empty restaurants and cafes too.

Monday 22nd - Already nearing the end of another month. Who would have thought it possible that we would still be in this predicament 6 months into 2020. Even with restrictions lifting, people around the globe are too frightened to believe it's safe. Ithaca will be counting on local tourism this year by the look of it.

Vathy Bay, usually full of yachts, is noticeably quiet. It's quite eerie really.

Tuesday 23rd - It really is such a shame that more people can't enjoy the beauty of Ithaki. I know wherever you are, there'll be beauty with you too...it's just that we miss you!

Above - Kioni with a few yachts in the bay.

Below - Yefuri had it's opening yesterday. As you may or may not know, it's now under new management.Roni from Roni Construction. He's also given it a bit of a do-over with an terrace dining area added. I believe generally, they'll try to keep some of Andy's famous menu and ambiance, but I guess time will tell.

Below - Afales Bay.

Above - Across the road from the 3rd Krouvoulia Beach between Frikes and Kioni.

Wednesday 24th - It only takes a few days of warm weather to turn the lush green valleys and hills brown. The wild flowers are gone, the thistles are beginning to wilt.

Thursday 25th - I guess the Covid-19 upside for Ithaca is that the island has an opportunity to replenish itself from the physical stresses on the environment of tourism, although I have heard that the flotillas in Lefkada have been put into the water, suggesting that the sailing tour groups may be back on the Ionian. Saturday 27th - Kosta from Avra Restaurant has the full headgear to protect his patrons, but where will he put his glasses?

Monday 29th - Below - The picturesque area of Koutoupi.

Above - With July around the corner and with more restrictions being lifted, Ithaca may see more people coming to the island over the next month. We shall see before too long.

Summer on Ithaca Greece

Saturday 20th

Monday 22nd - Below - Vathy, Ithaki's capital can feel like a ghost town some days.

Tuesday 23rd - It's pretty quiet around the villages. Locals are going about their business as if there is business, but it is disappointing to see the villages so empty.

Below - New Yefuri manager, Roni, with customer, Rachel.

Above - "Safe practices" Pardon? "I said safe practices". Huh? "hold on, i'll write it down".

Wednesday 24th - Below - Kathisma (Seat) over Afales. Looks like there'll be building going on there. The road is made.

Thursday 25th - Only another week of June and then comes a more hopeful (for some) July as more restrictions are lifted.

Saturday 27th

Monday 29th - Below - Stavros view from across the way in Kalivia.
