July 2018

Monday 16th - It's that time of year again - Summer Festival time! Starting with Ag. Marina, the festival (Panighiri) in Exoghi. Visitors usually head up there early and then go home before the music has even started, which is about 10.30 with some dinner music and maybe a waltz or 2. It really isn't until midnight that the party really starts so if you're thinking of going up to the village to celebrate my advice is: Get a good afternoon nap in and head up around 11.30 - midnight, then be prepared to stay up all night until dawn...oh and one last thing..Enjoy yourselves!

Above - Ithaca in summer revolves around the beach and food, but what's really special about the place is that you can meet someone and be friends a few minutes later, irregardless of the differences you may have.

Wednesday 18th - Last night the island, well some of the people on the island, headed up to Exoghi for the Ag. Marina Festival. What they got was a little unexpected. CLICK HERE or on photo below for more.

Thursday 19th - What a windy day yesterday. The temperature also dropped quite radically, especially at night.

Friday 20th - Yesterday, Debbie Argyropoulos, facebook manager for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society of Melbourne Australia, aka IPS, organized a coffee morning for the 'friends of' and group members. A great 'get to know eachother' morning, taking from virtual to reality. Always a great idea! The venue was Dona Lefki. Click Here or on photograph below for more.

Above - A perfect example of how deceptive photographs can be. The village of Exoghi looks like it's under a winter sky, but pan out and you'll see it's just a heat cloud that hangs over the village. See below.

Saturday 21st - There's no doubt that 2018 has been a 'strange weather year'. The sea is cooler than usual, the nights are cooler than usual and many days are cooler than usual. No one's really complaining because it makes sleeping much easier, but there is definitely something weird going on this year.

Above - Last night's panighiri in Kioni may have been under attended, but it went off with a bang. Great night for the village and the people who attended. For more photographs, CLICK HERE or on photo above.

Below - Here's a little video of the Kafethaki morning organized by Debbie Argyropoulos, manager of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society of Melbourne Australia's facebook group a few days ago, who got members out of the virtual and into the reality at Dona Lefki for a morning coffee.

Tuesday 24th - You'd never believe it was Summer! While areas around Corinth and Athens burned under 9 BF winds and 39C, here on Ithaca it rained and stormed. Yes! Believe it or not.

Below - Sunday a strange change in the weather pushed through, but after about half an hour, it cleared as you can see by the sunny faces and we had no idea what was ahead of us for Monday.

After a muggy start to the day, it rained...and rained...and rained.

Wednesday 25th - The strange weather disappeared as quickly as it appeared, leaving yesterday blue skied, sunny and clear.

Above - Lolek in Kioni. Lolek is one of Greece's deeply moving musical artists. His songs are dark and brooding, but not without some topical meaning.

Ithaca Greece in the Sun

Monday 16th

Above - You don't often see or hear the blowing of a conch shell, but if you're in Vathy at around the time the boat to Gidaki Beach leaves, you'll have this pleasure.

Thursday 19th - So much going on this Summer, best keep up to date on the calendar.

Friday 20th - If you're on Ithaki, I'd keep your eye on the Ithaki calendar here on ithacagreece.com and on the notice boards around the island. There's so much going on, you don't want to miss any of it. Tonight it's Panighiri time in Kioni for Ag. Elias. Always a great time with the bandstand right on the waterside and the dance circle between Avra and Mythos restaurants.

Above - An abundant grapevine in Lefki is rather mouth watering. Yes, it's that time of year where there is no such thing as the grapes of wrath, but only those of pleasure.

Tuesday 24th - Big Liners and tour buses make our little island look even smaller than usual under the enormity of these vessels and vehicles.

Getting caught behind a tour bus going from south to north can be quite a slow ride while the bus struggles to take the mountain at a speed that would encourage a traffic flow. Would be nice that when they see 10 cars piled up behind the bus, to stop on the side of the road where it's possible to let the cars pass. Yes! Would be nice!

Above - The annual wine festival is on again in Perahori this year. The village where the eco friendly set up their vineyards to make this organic local wine. Entrance fee is 3 euro. Cheap to have a great time!

There'll be music by a 'live' band and a dance circle to fill up, raffles and giveaways for young and old. Always a great night, but be prepared, parking can be a bit of a challenge along the narrow upward winding roads of Perahori village.
