July 2021

Thursday 1st

Below - Vathy has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. We're lucky enough to have it as part of Ithaca's capital town.

Friday 2nd -

Sunday 4th - There will be celebrations somewhere on this day, but on Ithaca is still pretty quiet. With travels laws changing tomorrow, no one really knows how it will effect people coming to the island. Definitely more expensive with PCR tests required for everyone that has not been double vaccinated. Fear is it will all have a negative effect after so many other negative effects on this small community and economy. An economy that relies on a good Summer season to survive all winter.

Wednesday 7th - Warm days. Early morning over Kioni.

Above - Polis Beach only look like this in the very early morning hours. Below - Sunset over Polis.

Saturday 10th - LInes and lines for covid tests indicate the demand to holiday is high, hopefully some of this demand will land on Ithaca to boost the local market.. Local Greek restrictions mandate tests for everyone that is not vaccinated before getting on any transport. This applies to Greeks and visitors to Greece.

Above - Kioni with Atokos in the distance.

Monday 12th - Things are picking up now. Hot days, balmy nights and more and more people coming to Ithaca. This is the booster shot this small community needs.

Above and Below - The game between England and Italy attracted huge crowds at every stop around the island with a widescreen satellite tv.

Summer on Ithaca Greece

Thursday 1st

It's Summer. It's hot! Kalo Mina everyone!

Above - Piso Aetos Ticket Booth. We're all happy that the route from Ithaca to Patras has resumed, but thank god for the Astakos ferry, without it Ithaca would be very stuck during the times the larger lines stop their route. It keeps Ithaca connected to Kefalonia and the Mainland all year around.

Friday 2nd - Still pretty quiet around the island. Yachters take the numbers up early to mid week, but then they die down again for the weekend. With new laws coming into effect this month in regard to restaurants, among other businesses, needing to register whether they will only accept vaccinated or a mix of unvaccinated and vaccinated patrons, with their decision impacting on how they will be entitled to run their business in terms of restrictions and capacity or no restrictions, it will be interesting to see how this government imposed segregation will go. It's something quite difficult to swallow, but considering that on Ithaca, most restaurants work outdoors, hopefully it will not negatively effect Ithacan restaurants. Patron proof must be provided via a QR code on mob phone. I just wonder how this will be policed with foreign patrons who will not have registered their health status online on the Greek platform. I have to say this makes me quite sad.

Sunday 4th - Below - Not all celebrities are as obliging to the locals as was Magic Johnson when he visited Ithaca in late June, taking photos with so many Ithacans.

Wednesday 7th - Below - Early morning in Frikes.

Above - The mills in Kioni. Below - Sunrise over Tsitsimida.

Saturday 10th - It took a little longer this year, but it's definitely hot now.

Monday 12th - There's no better place to be on a hot day than on or in the water. Just a side note, there appear to be more wasps around at this time of year than usual. If you're not allergic and looking for something natural that REALLY works with wasp stings (I've had several) squash garlic, put on sting, soak paper in vinegar and wrap around body part with sting. Within 10 minutes it's like you've never been stung. If you're allergic however, do your usual thing.
